Happy Halloween!
What will your costume be?
Here are some trick-o-treating important tips:
- Be Inviting. Put a Halloween decoration on your door so trick-or-treaters know your game.
- Keep pets away. Keep dogs, cats, and other pets a safe distance from trick-or-treaters. Some children scare easily, and certain pets can get aggressive or run out of your apartment and into trouble.
- Offer pre-packaged treats only. Play it safe by offering trick-or-treaters store-bought, pre-packaged treats. This will help parents feel confident that their children will enjoy a snack that’s fun — and safe.
- Consider fun, safe alternatives. A treat doesn’t have to mean food. Given the many children with food allergies or other dietary restrictions, why not offer some non-food Halloween treats to those kids who want them?
Kids/ Pre-teens
- Wear protective paint or tape on costumes (Avoid Masks)
- Cross only at corners and obey traffic lights
- Go only to homes with porch lights on
- Go to school party parent supervised neighborhood party
- Don’t eat candy/treat until a parent has inspected it
- Don’t carry lighted candles in plastic or artificial Jack-O-Lanters
- Don’t go trick-or-treating alone
- Don’t accept rides from strangers
Parents
- Accompany your children
- Give out wrapped candies/treats only
- Inspect treats and wash/inspect fruit
- Keep your children in your own neighborhood
Motorists
- Keep your headlights on
- Drive slowly being cautious for all children
- Stay alert — especially in residential areas
For FCV Residents:
If you live in a building where children/pre-teens celebrate the holiday by going from apartment to apartment in search of Halloween treats, you certainly don’t have to participate. If you want to avoid trick-or-treaters on Halloween:
Place a sign on the door if you don’t want treat-seekers knocking on your door all evening, alerting visitors with a sign should do the trick.
